Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
Ten years ago, we piloted Mindful Music Moments in response to school-wide increases in chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation among increasingly younger students. Now, in partnership with orchestras and education organizations across the country, we serve over 300 schools & organizations and over 100,000 youth PK-12 annually with a daily audio or video practice, full Spanish translations, weekly worksheets, professional development for staff, and additional resources of music-listening, poetry-writing, mindfulness practices, and more.
While the program has evolved and improved with direct teacher and student feedback, the experience remains as it was initially created ten years ago at the Academy of World Languages (AWL) where staff and students share four minutes of daily mindfulness, music, and emotional skill-building over the morning announcements. This year, eight students at AWL–who have never known a school day without Mindful Music Moments–were among 40 to graduate as our first-ever Mindful Music Youth Champions–directly influencing the future of the program.
Our ten-year anniversary was also accented by several in-school workshops with musicians, a new music commission “Mindful Music From Scratch” written, deciphered, and recorded by students, a Mindful Music Day with the Cincinnati Symphony at Music Hall, and a renewed partnership with the Columbus Symphony and OhioHealth to create Mindful Music for the Work Day: a weekly listening version for hospital staff, patients, and guests at OhioHealth.
This report shows the deeply interconnected impact of the program over the past year. Not just numbers, but what students and staff passionately feel the program means to them.
As we look back this year, an exciting new year is already in progress including a new music commission “Healing Harmonies” by 5 Cincinnati-based composers, Year 2 of Mindful Music Champions in Cincinnati and Cleveland, and new partnerships with Cincinnati Opera, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Toledo Symphony, and the Louisville Orchestra & I Would Rather Be Reading.
If this work speaks to you, we invite you to help compose our next ten years. For just $1.50 per student annually, you can provide a child with a full year of Mindful Music Moments–turning daily practice into 12 hours of mindfulness, exposure to 9 symphonies-worth of music, and a lifetime of self-regulation skills. Whether you choose to make a generous donation, register your local school, or partner with us on new commissions and collaborations, your support is instrumental to creating a well world.
