Healing Harmonies is a new music commission and public healing experience by The Well for its Mindful Music Moments program and the community.
Healing Harmonies will commission 5 Cincinnati-based composer-musicians to create new 3-minute pieces of music and a supplemental education activity inspired by a personally meaningful "healing theme," resulting in a series of original music and accompanying activities to improve mental and emotional well-being.
The new music and supplemental activities will premiere online publicly and be integrated into the 2026-2027 Mindful Music Moments curriculum (available to over 100,000 youth in schools nationwide). Additionally, the new music and activities will be activated during the 2026-2027 school year during in-school workshops with the composers and students.

Artists (L-R): Preston Bell Charles III, Alpha Arts Frierson, Mika Komuro, Aparna Nambirajan, Mr. Watt.
Why this project?
Good mental and emotional well-being is foundational for being a nourished, connected, and effective person in the world–and it matters at every stage in life. Unfortunately, mental health and well-being in the U.S. is a growing crisis for both youth and adults.
- In the Greater Cincinnati region, 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 4 young adults (ages 18-29) report that their mental health is not good on at least half of the days in one month (Spring 2022), which is only slightly better than the national average. (1)
- A study from 2024 of youth aged 10-24 shows that mental health issues continue to reach youth in greater numbers at younger ages. 47.4% (nearly half) of youth aged 15-24 feel overwhelmed by stress. Youth aged 10-14, nearly 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 10 boys even feel symptoms of depression or anxiety. (2)
- In the same 2024 study, 83% of youth aged 10-24 reported 'making or enjoying music, dancing, or creating art' helpful for their mental health and well-being, the 2nd highest category. (2)
That's where Mindful Music Moments comes in–a proven way to build skills in self-awareness, self-management, and music appreciation, and have a positive benefit on the mental and emotional well-being of youth and adults.
We strongly believe the positive benefit of Mindful Music listening doesn't just come from regular practice, but also the diversity of music being listened to.
Up until this project, our commissions emerge from the creative ideas and community engagement of a collaborator or composer. This new music commission is unique in that it will be the first where mental and emotional well-being and healing is not just the end goal, but also the explicit subject matter and part of the artistic process.

Last to mention, performing for a local NPR show of “The Moth”; leading to a long artistic relstion with True Theatre. Learning Through The Arts and Jazz Alive have been new and strong supports. Now in partnership with The Well!
