Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
Mindful Poetry Moments 2026 was such a robust year for the program. We shared Mindful Poetry with the most amount of poetry-lovers than we had in previous years, both through our Virtual Gatherings and online workshops alongside our in-person offerings at The Well and in schools all across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. As we continue to celebrate this past year's National Poetry Month, we also want to look ahead to what Mindful Poetry will offer over the next few months into the new year.
The theme for this past year’s National Poetry Month was This Common Home – poems that, according to Mindful Poetry Moments 2026 Curator Eddie Gonzalez, “remind us that we are deeply intertwined with the natural world, not separate from it, and that care—for ourselves, one another, and the earth—is a practice we can return to again and again.” The poems that he selected were from Ada Limon’s You Are Here: Poetry in the Natural World collection, including “Heliophilia” by Aimee Nezhukumatathil, “Quemado, Texas” by Analicia Sotelo, “If fire” by Jake Skeets, and “Lullaby for the Grieving” by Ashley M. Jones.
We’re so pleased to announce that poet Ashley M. Jones will serve as our Mindful Poetry Moments 2027 Curator! Like all the curators have done in the past for each National Poetry Month in April, Ashley will select the theme of our National Poetry Month and the four poems that we’ll read, contemplate, celebrate, and respond to with newly-written poetry throughout April and beyond.
Ashley M. Jones was Poet Laureate of Alabama from January 2022 – January 2026. She was the first person of color and youngest person in Alabama’s history to hold this position, which was created in 1930. Jones is the author of four poetry collections, most recently Lullaby for the Grieving. She is the author of the essay collection WHAT THE MIRROR SAID: THE NECESSITY OF BLACK WOMEN IN POETRY, and she is the co-editor of WHAT THINGS COST: An Anthology for the People. Jones has earned fellowships and awards from many organizations, including SouthArts, Academy of American Poets, the Rona Jaffe Foundation, and the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Her poems are published in many journals and publications including POETRY, Academy of American Poets, The Nation, The Atlantic, and The Oxford American, and her work has been featured by outlets including PBS, CNN, The BBC, Good Morning America, ABC News, and the New York Times. Jones is Chair of the Creative Writing Department at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, the executive director of the Magic City Poetry Festival, and she is a PhD student in English at Old Dominion University.
