Cincinnati Composers Turn Music Into Healing For 100,000 Students

CINCINNATI, OH– Following months of collaborative music recording, content development, and interactive school visits, The Well announces the completion and public premiere of "Healing Harmonies," a new music commission and public healing initiative for its flagship Mindful Music Moments program.

Supported in part by the GIG Fund: Arts & Wellness from Arts Midwest and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the project tasked five Cincinnati-based composer-musicians—Preston Bell Charles III, Alpha "Arts" Frierson, Mika Komuro, Aparna Nambirajan, and Mr. Watt—with creating original three-minute compositions and guided mindfulness exercises centered on personal themes of healing and resilience.

Recorded locally at the Music Resource Center (MRC) in Cincinnati, the project extends far beyond the studio. Artists visited local schools—including Finneytown Elementary (Finneytown Local School District), Frederick Douglass Elementary, Academy of World Languages (Cincinnati Public Schools), and St. Cecilia (CISE)—to perform their works live, unpack their creative processes, and explore how music can be a powerful tool for personal and collective healing and emotional regulation.

The live classroom activations offered students a rare look at how professional music is created while equipping them with practical, creative tools to manage everyday stress and anxiety.

During Fall 2026, the newly completed music pieces and accompanying mindfulness exercises will be integrated into the 2026–2027 Mindful Music Moments curriculum, reaching 100,000 students across the country during their regular Mindful Music practice. The tracks and activities are also available online for the broader community to listen and experience a mindful healing moment at home.

"We strongly believe the positive benefit of Mindful Music listening doesn't just come from regular practice, but also the relevance of music being listened to. Up until this project, our commissions emerge from the creative ideas and community engagement of a collaborator or composer. We're proud that this will be the first new music commission where mental and emotional well-being and healing is not just the end goal, but also the explicit subject matter and part of the artistic process."
- Bryce Kessler, Program Director at The Well
