Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
We're honored to be a mentioned by the League of American Orchestras as a resource and strategy for orchestras to engage in health & wellness. Our Mindful Music Moments program would not be possible without the collaboration and support of our world-class Community Arts Partners (including orchestras). Partnership allows us to support local schools at no cost to them, and connects their daily experience of calm and music listening to local opportunities through our partners.
But don't just take our word for it...
This program gives students—and just as importantly, teachers—a moment of stillness and reflection. These exercises are designed to meet them exactly where they are and give them the skills to compassionately respond, not just simply react.
Ben Kipp, VP Education & Community Engagement at Utah Symphony | Utah Opera
There are plenty of research studies that document the effectiveness of music to improve learning outcomes, to enhance brain development, especially in younger kids, because it’s lighting up different neurons in your brain and causing those connections to solidify in a way that they would not if they weren’t stimulated by music.
There’s no school that’s immune from the stress and anxiety...of the last decade.
Joan Katz, VP Education & Community Programs, The Cleveland Orchestra
Over the years, we’ve seen Mindful Music blossom from an experimental pilot at one school to a regional, and now national, daily practice for students. As a performance-based partner, we’ve noticed Mindful Music helps strengthen students’ familiarity and connection to orchestral music. To look out at a Young People’s Concert and see a student light up because they recognize the opening notes to The Firebird Finale from Mindful Music during their morning announcements, is a reminder of the power of music.
The foundation of trust and sincerity in the partnership allows for these unique, creative projects, which have led to new music, new student connections, and new experiences.
Becky Spiewak, Former Education Programs Manager at Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
From the Guide...
As evidence grows of music’s profound impact on health and well-being, orchestras are increasingly recognizing the potential to lead in this space.
While some orchestras have been involved in health-related partnerships for decades, the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising need for mental health support have accelerated this movement. Expanding programming with a focus on health and well-being is deepening orchestras’ community engagement while also demonstrating their role as vital contributors to public health, social connection, and local resilience.
