Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
This week, our Mindful Music Moments partner Summermusik (Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra) visited 230 students in grades 1-3 for a special mindfulness and music experience. Parker Woods Montessori is a part of Cincinnati Public Schools and has been using Mindful Music Moments for 9 school years!
For this visit, students practiced a guided meditation with live music accompaniment, followed by performances and engaging questions about music and our emotions. The cello and flute duet performed a range of pieces from "Morning Mood" by Edvard Grieg to "This is Halloween" by Danny Elfman from the movie "Nightmare Before Christmas" (the students were very much in the Halloween spirit this week).
The world-class musicians demonstrated how their instruments produced sound, as well as how they produced different emotions. Students were encouraged to share how they felt about the different pieces presented, and at the end imagined that they were the music conductors while they played.
Thanks so much to Summermusik, our musicians Annie Darlin Gordon (flute) and Nat Chaitkin (cello), and to the Parker Woods Montessori staff for making this special day happen.

Nat Chaitkin answers questions about his cello.

Annie Darlin Gordon shows students how sound on the flute is made.
