Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
In the United States where nearly half (47.4%) of youth aged 15–24 feel overwhelmed by stress (1), providing accessible, early-stage support for mental health and well-being has never been more urgent. Mindful Music Moments, The Well’s signature program, is celebrating 10 years of doing just that–now serving over 100,000 students and adults in more than 300 locations nationwide with a daily practice that combines mindfulness exercises and 3 minutes of classical and contemporary music.
While the program has evolved and found great success in the last 10 years from direct educator feedback, we’re now looking to hear from youth themselves. How has Mindful Music Moments made a difference in your life? What are the best parts of the experience and what could be improved? If you were in charge of Mindful Music Moments or your own well-being practices, what would you do?
To that end, we launched a new initiative: Mindful Music Youth Champions.
This initiative is designed to empower students to directly influence the program's future, reinforcing its role as a youth-inspired upstream service. Youth have always been the primary audience of Mindful Music Moments, but now they will be the conductors. By giving them a platform to share their experiences and creativity, Mindful Music Moments becomes a program that truly resonates with their needs.
Our first cohort of Youth Champions is kicking off with 40 students in grades 3-8 from four schools who have each been using Mindful Music Moments for over 9 years.
Students, nominated by their schools and supported by a dedicated staff champion, participate in a series of in-school sessions focused on creative projects, active listening, and critical questioning.
Youth Champions will learn the inner workings of Mindful Music Moments while sharing their own vital insights into mindfulness, stress management, and mental health. Their collaborative group projects—centered around music, mindfulness, and art-making—will shape new music curation, influence mindfulness prompts, and ultimately be broadcasted through the program.
The program culminates in a city-wide convening of all participating schools and their families at Music Hall. Here, the Youth Champions will be recognized with a certificate and invited to a Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concert. Their creative projects will be presented during a special lobby engagement, celebrating their role in making a lasting impact on the future of Mindful Music Moments nationwide.
