Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
This fall, 4 Mindful Music Moments schools received a special visit from Program Director Bryce Kessler and his cello, transforming the students' daily practice of mindful listening into an embodied, in-person lesson on sound, breath, and vibration.
In sessions held at St. Cecilia School in Cincinnati, and Canterbury Elementary, Memorial School, and Imagine Bella Academy in Cleveland, students explored how music can be a profound source of calm and focus. Each visit was designed to bring the program's core concepts to life, starting with a guided mindfulness exercise followed by an engaging lesson explaining the powerful connection between music listening, our breath, and our bodies.
The highlight for many students was the tactile experience of sound. Using simple tools like a tuning fork, chimes, and then his cello, Kessler demonstrated how sound creates vibrations that we can physically feel. Students were captivated as they touched the back of the instrument while it was played, a sensation that one student at a Cleveland school summarized perfectly: "It feels like music!" The experience culminated in a calming rendition of Bach's Cello Suite No. 1.
These schools are some of our Mindful Music champions, listening to hundreds of hours of mindfulness prompts and music.
Canterbury Elementary, partnering since 2018, with over 1,227 Mindful Music Moments played.
