Mindful Music Moments

Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.

Mindful Music for Christian & Catholic Schools

Did you know that many classical music selections are inspired by old hymns, requiems, organ music, and biblical texts from the Christian/Catholic church? Composers from as far back as the European Renaissance and Baroque eras–Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Vivaldi–wrote music influenced by the church. And creating music inspired by church settings has not stopped. Newer hymns based on classical music–"Be Still My Soul" based on "Finlandia" by Sibelius or "God Beyond All Praising" from "The Planets: IV. Jupiter" by Holst– and the rise of gospel traditions have infinitely expanded the Christian/Catholic canon of music that could speak to a Mindful Moment.

Inspired by Christian/Catholic schools that use Mindful Music Moments, we began piloting a "Sacred Classical" playlist in 2023 that inserts a monthly bonus selection of music with Christian origins. With this unique version of Mindful Music, we connect Christian themes within the music like faith, holiness, prayer, grace, and Latin texts to practices within a Christian/Catholic school setting like morning mass, prayer, and self-reflection–all meditative, mindfulness techniques that offer an opportunity to self-reflect on our emotions and state of mind which is what Mindful Music aims to do.

For the 2025-26 school year, seven schools will implement the "Sacred Classical" playlist. This initiative includes schools from Cincinnati's Catholic Inner-City School Education (CISE) Romero Academy at Resurrection, along with new CISE participants: DePaul Cristo Rey High School, St. Cecilia School, and Xavier Jesuit Academy. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, includes Divine Mercy Academy, Northside Catholic Assumption Academy, and Redeemer Lutheran School. Lastly, All Saints Academy also participates from Pennsylvania.

If you and your Christian/Catholic school are interested in the Sacred playlist for 2025-26, you can sign up today or contact bryce@thewell.world for more info.

This year's playlist features:

  • "Ave Maria" by Johann Sebastian Bach and Charles-François Gounod
  • "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson
  • "It Is Well (Peace Like a River)" by Horatio G. Spafford and Philip P. Bliss
  • "Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming" by Michael Praetorius
  • "Silent Night" by Franz Xaver Gruber
  • "Requiem: VI. Agnus Dei" by Gabriel Fauré
  • "Ave verum corpus" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
  • "Missa Papae Marcelli: Agnus Dei" by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
  • "Gloria in D Major: VI. Domine Deus" by Antonio Vivaldi

Listen to the interview here (22:00)

MMM at Northside Catholic Assumption Academy was also covered by Jeremy Reynolds in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

"In a brightly lit classroom filled with the typical grade-school clutter of maps and backpacks and letters, about a dozen kids settle into their assigned desks on a hazy August morning."

The best part of MMM is how it touches students lives and introduces them to the magic of music!
