Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
The Well partnered with Summermusik (Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra) for some extra special music classes at the Academy of World Languages (AWL) Elementary School in Cincinnati. AWL is a Cincinnati Public School focusing on world languages and a space for young immigrants and refugees to feel at home. AWL was the first school to experience Mindful Music Moments in 2016 and Summermusik is a long time music and commissioning partner. For this visit, 2nd and 5th grade classes enjoyed a live rendition of Mindful Music Moments, with a performance and lesson from cellist Tom Guth, and flutist Annie Darlin Gordon.
The duet performed a range of pieces, like American folk music with “Oh Shenandoah”, a portion of a suite by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Beethoven’s inspirational “Ode to Joy”. The world-class musicians demonstrated how their instruments produced sound, as well as how they produced different emotions. Students were encouraged to share how they felt about the different pieces presented, and all of them were moved to dance to a Mozart classic.
Thanks so much to Summermusik, musicians, and Mr. Stewart for making this special day happen.
