Mindful Music Moments

Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.

Tuning into Wellness: Mindful Music Moments at OhioHealth

Workdayplaylist1

In 2022, The Well, in partnership with the Columbus Symphony, piloted a weekly version of Mindful Music Moments designed for adults in the workplace. Unlike the school-based program, the business-focused playlist offered one mindfulness prompt paired with a classical music selection each week, tailored specifically for working adults and available for unlimited replay.

Bryce Kessler, Director of Music & Arts Programming at The Well, crafted a 52-week playlist that began in January 2022 from our library of Mindful Music. Selections spanned from the Baroque era of Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi, to the Romantic era stylings of Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns, and Boulanger, to the Modern compositions of living composers like John Luther Adams, Brian Raphael Nabors, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Reena Esmail.

OhioHealth, a not-for-profit system of hospitals and healthcare providers based in Columbus and the Central Ohio area, has continued to use Mindful Music Moments since launching the work day playlist. Not only have they used it as an offering for staff, but also as a weekly ritual with staff meetings and patient groups.

Katie Reid, PsyD, MBA, and Manager of OhioHealth Well-Being Operations, shared the following about the impact of Mindful Music Moments:

“Our Well-Being team promotes the Mindful Music offering from our partners at The Well when we present to teams and interact with groups and individuals throughout OhioHealth. Our clinical teams also use it as an adjunctive measure for patients experiencing anxiety or distress in the clinical setting.  It is an excellent resource for our associates, providers and patients that allows for increased accessibility to regular mindfulness practices.”

With the success of the program at OhioHealth and the continued support from the Columbus Symphony, this summer, The Well is implementing new and exciting changes to the work day playlist.

“There will still be the same weekly style of Mindful Music, but with all updated mindfulness prompts, new music selections, and new weekly animated video versions,” says Bryce Kessler. “We're also creating a new Wellness Resource portal with 30+ evergreen Mindful Music Moments, Mindful Poetry Moments, Guided Meditations, and mindfulness practice videos accessible by all patients, staff, and associates across the OhioHealth system.”

With the stress and anxieties of everyday life, Mindful Music provides a pause in the work day to regulate your nervous system, refresh your mind, and reconnect with the present moment.
