Mindful Music at Summit Elementary

Last week I had the honor of visiting Summit Elementary, a Mindful Music school since 2021. Stacey Moyer, the music teacher at Summit who also writes the content for our Mindful Music worksheets, has been a longtime advocate and partner but this was the first time I had been able to arrange a special visit with the students to see Mindful Music in action.

Third grade was the first class of the day. They've been practicing Mindful Music Moments in Ms. Moyer's room for a few years now and were ready in a mindful seated position before the music even began.

We began each class by listening to the Mindful Music for the day which was Dearly Beloved by Yoko Shimomura, from the Disney video game Kingdom Hearts. We talked about how the music made them feel– calm, relaxed, sleepy– and then talked about how music is made by instruments through vibration. We saw and heard the vibrational sound of a tuning fork, a kalimba, and the cello. With the cello, you can actually feel the vibrations of the music so students were invited to come up and feel the music vibrate through their hands. It was a powerful moment for me (as a cellist) but also as a Mindful Music educator to see how these young learners are already understanding how music and sounds can influence their emotions. We ended the class with a fun freeze dance, playing different styles of music on cello, and time for many questions about how the cello and Mindful Music Moments works.

Fourth grade had a special activity. As part of our next Mindful Music commission called From Scratch, we worked together to fill-in-the-blanks of a poem about music and mindfulness. The words they chose along with the words from 19 other classrooms in our region will be deciphered and composed into a new piece of music created by high school students in the From Scratch program. The new music will premiere in Fall 2025. Learn more here.

Thank you so much to Ms. Moyer and our amazing photographers Blake Freechtle and Carissa Ray from Greencraft Media.
