Music + Mindfulness = Calm Classrooms

Using Music to Calm, Focus, and Empower Cleveland Students

Cleveland, OH — Amid a national youth mental health crisis, schools in Cleveland are turning to creative solutions like The Well's Mindful Music Moments. This groundbreaking program combines mindfulness practices with world-class music to help students manage stress, improve focus, and create a sense of calm — all in just a few minutes each day.

In Partnership with The Cleveland Orchestra, The Well provides this program to nearly 100 schools, classrooms, and social service organizations across Northeast Ohio, fostering emotional well-being and helping students thrive both academically and personally. With the demand for mental health support in schools at an all-time high, Mindful Music Moments offers a simple, effective, and accessible tool to make a profound difference.

"There are plenty of research studies that document the effectiveness of music to improve learning outcomes, to enhance brain development, especially in younger kids, because it’s lighting up different neurons in your brain and causing those connections to solidify in a way that they would not if they weren’t stimulated by music.” – Joan Katz Napoli, Vice President of Education & Community Programs at The Cleveland Orchestra

Empowering Cleveland Schools Through Music and Mindfulness

Cleveland professionals will be getting a closer look at these practices during upcoming professional development sessions at the end of January. These workshops, designed for educators, will focus on how music and mindfulness can be seamlessly integrated into classrooms to improve student mental health and behavior.

“We understand the challenges educators face every day,” explains Sims. “Our goal is to ensure they feel supported and equipped with the tools they need to prioritize both the academic and emotional needs of their students.”

Renewing Media Spotlight on Cleveland Schools

Despite the program’s success and its deep partnership with The Cleveland Orchestra, there hasn’t been significant local media coverage about this impactful initiative since a PBS NewsHour feature in 2019. This presents an exciting opportunity to shine a light on Cleveland schools and showcase how they are leading the way in addressing youth mental health through innovative practices.

The Well is also inviting media coverage within Cleveland schools during the week of January 27, with flexibility for scheduling earlier opportunities. These sessions will highlight the real-world impact of Mindful Music Moments, from the perspective of students, staff, and district leaders.

Creating Calm Amid Crisis

The need for mental health programs in schools is pressing. Youth mental health is at the forefront of national educational concerns, and programs like Mindful Music Moments are stepping up to offer real, measurable solutions.

Since its launch, the program has expanded to serve nearly 300 schools nationwide and sees continuing success in Cleveland, thanks to its collaboration with The Cleveland Orchestra and its alignment with educators' goals for well-being and academic success.

Amplify the Mission

With a mission to build a "well world", The Well continues to innovate at the intersection of arts, mindfulness, and mental well-being. Programs like Mindful Music Moments bring the timeless power of music to one of the most critical places of all — our schools.
