Bringing Wonder To UpSpring Summer Camp For Greater Cincinnati Unhoused Youth

We've had a deeply nourishing week at UpSpring's Summer 360 summer camp for unhoused youth. We visited both the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky camps to talk with campers about mindfulness, movement, music, and wonder as part of our ongoing new music commission called The Wonder Commission.

Stacy shares the quiet vibrations of a tuning fork with campers sitting in a circle.

Asa records the voices of three young campers sitting at a table.

Asa records the voices of two young campers.

Stacy asks a large circle of campers about wonder.

We visited each of the two camps for two days. Day 1 focused on introducing mindful meditation with music, played by Bryce Kessler on cello, exploring sound and vibrations, played by Stacy Sims on tuning fork and koshi chimes, and space-inspired movement exercises, facilitated by Charli Littleton with cello accompaniment. Day 2 we explored a guided meditation on wonder with time for drawing galaxies and recording individual youth voices reciting their ideas about space and wonder.

Each camper received their own Wonder Workbook with additional activities and some of their voices will be integrated into the new music created this summer by Brian Raphael Nabors. The new music will premiere in The Well's Mindful Music Moments program for schools this Fall 2024.
