The Wellness Garden
The Wellness Garden by resident artist Julia O. Bianco needs you. Volunteer, donate, learn with us.
Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve. How do we create our programs? In partnership with others and especially those we serve.

Today, we are launching the incredible results of Sound Intersections, our collaborative musical commission created by composer Nate May for Mindful Music Moments! Over the past few months, Nate May has been composing Ohio Valley Moments, a brand new suite of music made for Mindful Music Moments, inspired by the musical explorations from our initial Sound Intersections Listening & Learning event.
In addition to these three new compositions, we're also excited to share the official documentary on the inception, process, and ultimately the creation of these pieces - featuring interviews with all the Sound Intersections collaborators.

The commission began initially as a community sound session on February 11, 2023 featuring Nate May, storyteller Omope Carter Daboiku, interpreter and Shawnee Citizen Talon Silverhorn, and musicians Jay Bolotin, Mike Oberst, and Matthew McAllister. The session was aimed at exploring the intersection of historical Appalachian, African American, and Native American sound and music within the Ohio River Valley region, has led to the creation of three brand new compositions to be shared across the Mindful Music Moments program this November.
Additionally, tonight and tomorrow (October 20 & 21 2023) FotoFocus and Creative Time will be presenting The Convening, a special series of public talks and performances in Cincinnati featuring artists, critics, curators, and other distinguished guest speakers — including so many of our Sound Intersections collaborators. Tonight at MECCA OTR, Nate May, Omope Carter Daiboku, and Talon Silverhorn will be featured for a Welcome Reception and Performance. On Saturday for The Convening's Borders and Exchange session, Sound Intersections will be featured at the opening event and in a special workshop on Saturday at 2:30pm at the Contemporary Arts Center, featuring the aforementioned artists in another workshop performance with Jay Bolotin, Kathryne Gardette, and Baba Charles Miller!
We're so proud of our collaborators and how this project turned out, especially with how it importantly explored the intersection of culture through a generative, collaborative process — with a beautiful result we can share with all of our Mindful Music listeners. We hope to continue to work with these wonderful artists in the future and to nurture more commissions just like it!
