The Well at Cincinnati's first Little Amal Day!

This past Friday, September 22nd alongside the rest of Cincinnati, we had the very special opportunity to walk with Little Amal - a 12-foot puppet of a 10-year old Syrian refugee girl - during her Queen City stop for her Walk Across America tour to spread awareness of the stories of refugees, immigrants, and displaced people.

Amal began her walk on the Covington side of the Roebling bridge, symbolically paying homage to escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad seeking refuge in Cincinnati. People of all ages from all across the globe in Cincinnati celebrated her crossing, including including several youth choirs (Cincinnati Boychoir, Cincinnati Youth Choir, Covington Catholic Choirs, SCPA Choirs, adn the Young Professional Choral Collective) and Mayor Aftab Pureval, the latter of whom met Amal at the center of the bridgeand walked alongside her. As she arrived on the Cincinnati side,  Aftab Pureval declared September 22nd to be Cincinnati's annual "Little Amal Day," celebrating the stories of those seeking a home.

Amal ended her journey in Cincinnati by visiting the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, where the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra hosted a concert performing songs to commemorate Little Amal and the journeys she represents.

In anticipation of Little Amal's arrival, The Well commissioned The Hope Commission, a brand new piece of music composed by Sonia Morales-Matos and performed by the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra to be shared through Mindful Music Moments. The music was inspired by a visit to Refugee Connect during their World Day Cup this past summer, where The Well and Sonia asked folks: "What gives you hope?"

This past Friday — seeing everyone gathered together in solidarity with displaced folks all over the world — was certainly a hopeful one.
