Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
In early 2020, The Well collaborated with UC Health's Integrative Medicine Center to bring Mindful Music to patients and caregivers in the Infusion Suite and waiting areas of the Gardner Neuroscience Institute.
Within a week, the healthcare world shifted to pandemic preparedness and staff well-being. So thanks to a few leadership gifts and donations, The Well was able to pivot to provide playlists for employee well-being to UChicago Medicine's Comer Children's and UC Health.
Additionally, we realized that patients were suffering in new ways due to COVID-19 limits on who can visit. In November 2020, the WLNS 102 channel launched at UC Medical Center. The channel was streamed through all inpatient rooms with televisions in the hospital, providing more than six hours of mindfulness-based content, which has been developed by The Well and UC Health plus content from a number of local partners: the Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and Cincinnati Zoo.
Evidence-based research supports that by focusing on and practicing mindfulness techniques, patients can regulate and relax their own nervous systems.
“We know through decades of science that you can down-regulate your nervous system to improve things like cardiovascular health, cognitive and brain health, and even overall recovery time,” Dr. Sian Cotton from UC Health explained. “It’s then, when a patient begins to experience improved sleep, improved emotion regulation, less anxiety and stress.”
“Our healthcare system has been busier than ever managing the impact of the pandemic and keeping our community safe,” said Dr. Cotton. “But our extraordinary associates across numerous departments – from Information Technology & Security, Patient Safety and Patient Satisfaction – all recognized our patients’ needs for comfort and healing and quickly mobilized to create the WLNS channel.”
Staff from The Well and UC Health celebrate the new collaboration.
