Mindful Music Moments

Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.

What Reality Is

What Reality Is

What Reality Is is an EP (shorter version of a musical album) by The Musky Tears that shows the true natural reality of the Ohio River and the truth of its grimy background. It also shows how there are ways to convey an important message through the form of music.

This image shows the cover of the EP and is used to get a feel for the music's message.

What Reality Is EP Lyrics

Ohio Ripple

The Ohio River is brown
All kinds of poop on the ground
Black, yellow, white, green
These ducks are makin’ a scene
I’m on site, on the bridge
Looking down at all the garbage
As it floats down the stream
I hear the river’s soul scream

The river making ripples
All these roots are crippled
We as free as the geese
My shoes aren’t getting creased
Crossing it was a breeze
E-coli, measles, and fleas
Toxic waters toxic dreams
Why can’t you just see?

All the bacteria
My shoe got soaked with it
This river is polluted
And it smells like unwashed pits

This river is home
to many ducks in the water
I don’t even bother
There’s people jogging
I look at them funny
pipes are runny with gunk
All these fish are sunk
These ducks are screwed
This river’s sick of getting used

There’s crazy history with the river
The river flows like our liver
Breathes like our lungs
Beats like our heart
Ripples like our soul

Blood Clot

The river runs deep with blood
Deep red is mixed with brown mud
Carried away by streams
These pigs are torn apart by the seams

Swimming intestinal tracts
New life, a swath of attacks
This river's coming alive
Man's greed and swine combined, and now it's arrived

Blood clot,
Yeah, you know that it's a
Blood clot
What can we do to fix this
Blood clot
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
In the break of dawn we'll fade away

Yeah, can you believe it?
A river whose life we took could teem with it?
But this isn't any normal kind,
Onlookers are in for a porky surprise!

Pig heads emerge from the depths, and,
Foul scents overwhelm your senses
I smell bacon behind me...
Who will stop this travesty?!

Blood clot,
Yeah, you know that it's a
Blood clot
What can we do to fix this
Blood clot
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
In the break of dawn we'll fade away

Rooted Suppression

Let's be honest, just hear me out
Black Lives Matter, can you hear us shout?
From humble beginnings, to humble ends
You think we could ever make amends?
They rendered us captive, amped up the pain
It’s enough to make you go insane

Yeah, from time up to time down, we’ve come from a time we could explain this from sound
Yeah, from memorial scars to silence, in the light from the underground to the upstream, we’ve left many legacies

(Incarcerated in chains, that’s lame
Incarnated through pain, what a shame)
(Incarcerated in chains, that’s lame
Incarnated through pain, what a shame)

Yeah, this world seemed like something we’d wish from heaven
Now there’s people on the streets who don’t make it to seven
Yeah, we used to have god’s picture, don’t have his vision
Let’s take care of the future and make a decision

This time tomorrow, things will change, believe in us
And try your best not to get blood clots
I know it’s a lot, but it shouldn’t be just a thought
We can make these things happen if you just give us a shot

(Incarcerated in chains, that’s lame
Incarnated through pain, what a shame)
(Incarcerated in chains, that’s lame
Incarnated through pain, what a shame)

What Reality Is

(Hear the waves clashing,
Feel the river emerging,
Life everlasting,
Mind and earth are merging)

Are you ready to see what reality is,
When you peer through the veil of earth and ether?
Are you ready to see the river’s soul,
When the roots grab your leg and drag you deeper?

We saluted to pollution and colluded with the smoke,
Lightning came out our pipes and we couldn’t help but choke
We thundered ‘til we plundered like the treasure of the sea,
And we saw the ground below us slowly lose its vibrant green

Pick it up, pick it up, pick it up now
Throw away those rosy glasses
Pick it up, pick it up, pick it up now
Throw away those rosy glasses
Pick it up, pick it up, pick it up now
Throw away those rosy glasses
Pick it up, pick it up, pick it up now
Throw away those rosy glasses

Every time I see a person in pain,
I know that laughing would only be a figure of shame
You know lettin’ life be short is a crime, so go on with love, don’t bide your time
You know you gotta smile while you still have it, ‘cus you never know what’d happen that could seek havoc

Listen,
We’re just some young people on a mission
With a vision that we hope will come to fruition
August’s sittin’, he just picked up some chicken,
He’s spittin’, showing us the bars he’s written
I know somewhere inside us, yeah, what’s bundled walks a path,
Under glittered skies and fireflies we tread the aftermath,
No, there’s nowhere to go, there’s nothing to show,
It’s just so, what do I know? Within this repose, we reap what we sow

(Hear the waves clashing,
Feel the river emerging,
Life everlasting,
Mind and earth are merging)
