Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
Explore the sonic awareness practice of Deep Listening with composer & musician Owen Hopper
Deep Listening® is a sonic awareness practice developed by composer, performer, and humanitarian Pauline Oliveros in the 1970s. It explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the conscious nature of listening through three modalities: Listening, Bodywork, and Dreamwork. Through body exercises, sonic meditations, interactive performance, and listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, thoughts, imagination, and dreams; It cultivates a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness, and other creative skills vital to personal and communal growth.
A Deep Listening® workshop is a 3-hour event that provides a thorough introduction or continuation to the practice of Deep Listening® as it was developed Oliveros. The workshop gives both theoretical overviews of the core concepts of Deep Listening® philosophy, as well as hands-on experience with the practices through guided movement, sounding, listening meditations, and dream work.
Owen Hopper is a certified Deep Listening® facilitator through The Center for Deep Listening, as well as a composer and improvising musician. He discovered Deep Listening® practices over a decade ago and has been influenced by the powerful outcomes in both his artistic practices and personal life. He leads Deep Listening® Workshops both in-person and online.
