Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.

For our third session, The Hive's Executive Director Chris La Rue has selected The Inner Life and Social Responsibility by Howard Thurman. This book is a collection of curated transcripts of Thurmanb's sermons, particularly those focusing on meditation, introspection, and self-discovery. We'll focus particularly on his sermon series on The Inner Life, from pages 46-104. The Inner Life II: The Inward Sea and The Inner Life III: The Fluid Area of Consent (pages 56-69) are the most important to read to get a foundational understanding of Thurman's spirituality.
Howard Thurman (1899-1981) was a mystic, preacher, and spiritual advisor of many people on the frontlines of the Civil Rights Movement, perhaps most notably, Martin Luther King Jr. An elder during the movement, Thurman was less of a frontline activist and more of a grounded pastoral theologian who saw the cultivation of one’s inner life as deeply necessary for authoritative change-making in the world. Thurman was a leading prophetic witness against segregation and Jim Crow laws; his practice of resistance led him to start one of the first intentionally racially integrated faith communities in America.
Sunday, November 16th, 3:00-4:30pm. Free.
"The Inner Life and Social Responsibility" Selection
Chris La Rue has been the Executive Director of The Hive: A Center for Contemplation, Art, and Action since 2023. As the “chief storyteller,” Chris seeks to amplify the story of transformation The Hive has to tell: one in which people integrate the wisdom of our contemplative traditions in ways that make meaningful collective change possible. He is currently writing his thesis on Howard Thurman's spirituality as part of his MA in Theological Studies at Xavier University. Follow along with his thesis on Substack.
