Imagine an entire school – students, teachers, and administrators – taking time each morning to turn inward together, and listen to a brief mindfulness prompt and world-class music.
The Well's programs combine best practices in arts and wellness and are designed in partnership with those they serve.
For two weeks in the summer of 2018, students from Music Resource Center (MRC) worked with composer Brian Raphael Nabors to write music to help us connect with one another and experience the world around us. Thanks to Dr. John and Susan Tew, in partnership with Cincinnati's MRC and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's Educator Network, we were delighted to help host the dynamic young composer Nabors for a multi-week residency at MRC. MRC utilizes the recording and performing arts to create a sense of empowerment and accomplishment among teens in urban communities, and Nabors worked directly with MRC's student musicians to offer mentoring, as well as to create and record original music.
Students took inspiration from two themes: Music as Medicine and Sounds of Deep Space. After students experimented with singing bowls, four hands on the piano and inner piano plucking, the piece was written by layering harmonies with more randomized-sounding elements. This created a soundscape that represented the unknown and known depths of space.
